PROPAGANDA was inspired by hand gestures seen in propaganda posters and images taken of leaders of major political revolutions in the 20th century. Stripping away the original politics that supplemented images of these hands (elements such as color, faces, and text) what’s left behind are disembodied hands against black. This series observes gestures originating from different political revolutions, creating a situation where they co-exist against black. Stillness is broken by motion. Rigidity gives way to fluidity. The camera destabilizes the gestures and morphs hand and limb into a theatre of spectral, otherworldly forms.
This series is also realized as a photo book.
PROPAGANDA has been installed as an art exhibition multiple times, including once as a part of a group exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego in La Jolla.
